Fall 2009 - Carl Zimmer
The Origin of Species: 1859 meets 2009

November 18, 2009 - 7:00pm

This year the world celebrates the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species; the most important book in the history of modern biology. The science of evolutionary biology has come a long way since 1859. In this talk, Carl Zimmer takes a look at how scientists are studying evolution to grapple with one of the most important challenges we face: the emergence of new diseases.

Carl Zimmer started writing about science at Discover in 1990, where he later served as a senior editor. Today he continues as a contributing editor at Discover and writes for numerous other publications, including the New York Times. Zimmer is the author of seven books, including The Tangled Bank: An Introduction to Evolution. His numerous honours include the National Academies Science Communication Award and a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Zimmer is a lecturer at Yale, where he teaches science writing, and is a Visiting Scholar at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute.
