Spiders from Papua New Guinea | letter from Wayne | gallery | background | more info and FAQs
Dr. Wayne Maddison, Director of the Beaty Museum, spent part of this past summer in the jungles of Papua New Guinea with the support of Conservation International. Dr. Maddison was searching for new species of jumping spiders, as part of a team surveying the rich biodiversity of the Papua New Guinea forests. Amazingly, he found dozens of species new to science.

Read Dr. Maddison's account of what it is like to collect spiders in the tropical rainforest, in sites so remote they could only be reached by helicopter.

See the incredible shapes and colours of the spiders and watch videos of their unusual mating dances.
